Becoming Bipedal

Watch our latest Experiences video on bipedalism, 3D animation and motion capture!

Walking upright is an evolutionary feat millions of years in the making. Patrice and Alex from Panache explore the origins of bipedalism with Pr. Michelle Drapeau, expert in the field, as she discovers the rudiments of 3D animation.

In this fifth episode, Patrice and paleoanthropology professor from Université de Montréal Michelle Drapeau identify some factors that led our hominid ancestors to evolve from crawling on four legs to standing and walking upright. As Neogene Africa experienced environmental changes, hominids adapted for a better to chance to survive in this dangerous land.

As Alex, Animation Director, shows how these early movements were replicated in-game with the use of motion capture and 3D animation, Pr. Drapeau can see more closely how this shift to bipedalism benefitted our ancestors in their trek across Africa, ultimately leading to the development of modern humankind.
